The newly-built Shipwreck Cove sprayground at Bay Shore Marina Park is the latest zero-depth pool on Long Island. Located between the marina and a small beach, you can't beat the seashore feel as the kids frolic in the water. There is one main play structure that is highlighted by a large open slide on the front and a covered slide to the rear. with various sprayers that keep the water flowing in all directions. Kids have two options for getting onto the big slide: a standard staircase and a challenging rope climb that is periodically doused by the giant water bucket above.

The nautical theme is carried throughout the play area, with sails and cannons dumping water and a scurvy pirate keeping watch over the whole affair.

The pool is deep enough in the middle for an average-sized kid to sit and be covered up to his shoulders, and rises gently to a three-inch depth at the edges. The deck that surrounds the pool has many tables and chairs, but they're a precious commodity. They get taken up quickly, although attendants at the pool will let you bring your own folding chair. Food and beverages are not allowed on the pool deck.

In addition to the main play structure, there are a few smaller sprayers scattered about. There is a small slide for toddlers, a free-standing trough that spills over, a lighthouse sprinkler and a large circle which sprays into its interior. There are also small jets around the perimeter of the pool, perfect for the little ones.

The large bucket that dumps water is positioned over the roof of the waiting area for the big slide, which is a nice touch (keeping waiting sliders out of the sun). The line moves quickly, it never extended off the stairs during our visit. While it is a nice slide, older kids who are used to theme park water slides may find that it's a little short on thrills.

Shipwreck Cove is open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the summer. Islip residents with a recreation card enjoy free parking and a $5 admission fee. Non residents must pay $10 to park and another $10 per person to enter the sprayground. Children under four are free. Parking includes access to the beach and the public restrooms.
The Elizabeth Morton Wildlife Refuge is a federal wildlife area that sits on 187 acres of waterfront land just west of the town of Sag Harbor. Its unique environment features saltwater marshes, freshwater ponds, kettle holes and other ecosystems that attract a wide variety of birds and animals.

The refuge has a modest parking area that is paved and well-marked. Its popularity during the summer months can make it difficult to find parking, but late spring and early fall are ideal times to visit. Parking costs $4.00 per vehicle and an honor box is located near the entrance. Once inside, you will find a number of publications and guides to help you navigate the well-maintained trails that take you past the wildlife viewing areas.

The views along many parts of the trail are spectacular. Nestled between the Little Peconic and Noyac bays, the refuge provides sweeping vistas of pristine waterfront.

The beach itself stretches for miles and is a perfect spot to stop for a picnic and get your feet wet. There isn't much in the way of facilities on the beach itself, so it's not an ideal spot for a day at the beach. But if you're into collecting shells and enjoying the sea air, you could hardly do better than the Elizabeth Morton Wildlife Refuge.

The most compelling attraction at the refuge are the many birds that make their home there. Many have become so accustomed to human visitors that they will come and eat seeds right out of your hand. Be sure to bring some bird seed with you, but be careful not to bring too much -- excess seeds around the path have led to a rodent problem that threatens the natural balance of the habitat. Be sure to bring any unused seed home with you.

Near the entrance, visitors will find an information center as well as restrooms and recycling bins for any trash you may have brought in for picnicking. The preserve is open every day, from a half hour before sunrise until a half hour after sunset. Parts of the beach are closed during the nesting season, from April 1st through August 31st. The trails through the woods run for nearly two miles, and there is is shorter option for smaller legs. The trails are loose sand, but are mostly packed hard enough to navigate with a stroller.

Kip Lee Park is located in the parking lot behind the Main Street stores in Port Jeff. There is plenty of parking, but you have to pay for it. Automated kiosks dot the landscape all around the parking areas in the village of Port Jefferson, and code enforcement will find you should it slip your mind to pay up. The good news is, it's not very expensive -- a few quarters will buy plenty of playground time and the machines do accept ATM cards if you'll be staying longer. A midafternoon weekday visit found plenty of parking immediately adjacent to the playground.

The play area is divided roughly into two parts, for older and younger children. The older area is dominated by a slide structure that resembles a rocket ship. It has multiple climbing platforms and two long covered slides that are very popular. The second playset is geared more towards wire climbs, but has three slides of its own.

The equipment at Kip Lee Park is older, but it's in very good condition. The color may be fading, but there's not much chipped paint or rust to be found. The play surface is a soft sand, which can be a little rough on the eyes on a bright and sunny day. But for the kids, it's a giant sandbox.

The section for smaller children features two more playsets. The first one offers access via easy stairways or a wire bridge for the better climbers. A covered slide descends from a pavilion into the sand. There are plenty of benches located around the park, and the whole area is fenced in to keep kids away from the busy parking lot.

The last of the playsets is the closest to the ground, and offers a great introduction to new playground visitors. Children can get on via short stairs or a long ramp. The ramp leads up to another platform and step, so it's not handicap accessible. There are two short and wide slides for little ones, and even a covered slide for the more adventurous toddler.

There are two banks of swings at Kip Lee Park, one toddler set and one standard. There is plenty of capacity: six swings in the toddler area and four standard swings for the big kids. The only problem with the swings here is that they are in full midday sun. On a hot summer day, the swings get pretty hot and it's not too comfortable to stay on them for very long.

Back to the main attraction at Kip Lee Park: the big slides. The rocket-themed pavilion is a great spot for kids to play out of the sun, and the climb up is great exercise. Once at the top, there are two curvy covered slides whose height is akin to sliding out of a second-story window. You won't find many slides of this length that don't empty into a pool.

Kip Lee Park is open every day from sunrise to sunset. Located right in the heart of Port Jefferson village, there are plenty of places nearby to eat or just browse. In addition to the playground, there are tennis and basketball courts, and there are public restroom facilities nearby. A stop at the playground is a nice addition to a visit to the Children's Maritime Museum, just across town.
Gardiner County Park is located just east of the intersection of Montauk Highway and the Robert Moses Causeway. The parking is a large dirt lot with easy access to the playground area. The playground itself is a single set that combines a low stairway with some more challenging wire climbs. There is a double kiddie slide as well as a corkscrew and a large bumpy slide. The whole playset is exposed to full sun, and there are no built-in pavilions. The play surface is a thin wood mulch.

The swings at Gardiner are simple as well, with two standard and two toddler swings on a single set. The swings are in good condition, although the landing area, like the jungle gym, is just a thin layer of wood mulch and dirt. The play area is surrounded by benches and picnic tables, including a very large covered area with tables and grills. Near the entrance from the parking area is a park house where you will find the public restrooms.

There are a pair of anchored rockers near the picnic tables. The big attraction at Gardiner County Park is the open space and the pet-friendly policy. There is a lot of room to roam, and if you'd like to take your dog for a run in the park with the kids, this is a great spot to do it. Of course, this also means keeping an eye out for the... integrity of your child's shoes.

The other prime reason for a trip to Gardiner is the long nature trail that leads down to the water. This is a long trail, and smaller children who are not up for a lot of walking would probably be better off skipping the trail. During our visit, there had been some recent rain and parts of the trail were very wet and muddy. Absent the standing water, the trail is hard enough to push a stroller through fairly easily. As you make your way towards the water, there are a lot of opportunities to see native animals in their habitat along the path. Even on hot days, the natural canopy provides plenty of shade.

The trail ends at the shore of the Great South Bay. This isn't really a spot to go swimming -- it's not much of a beach and there are no facilities once you get down there. But it's perfectly fine for getting your feet wet and gives you a great view of the bridges over the Causeway. A trail that winds its way along the beach can be more fun to explore if your kids are interested in spotting the many birds that make their home here.

Gardiner County Park is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. It's a good spot to visit if you're looking for something of an adventure (the trail) or if Fido needs some playground time as much as the kids.

Located just a quarter mile east of Route 110 on Old Country Road, White Post Farms has extensive parking areas that can handle a lot of visitors. If you're visiting with children and intend to walk around the farm, skip the first parking lot and head over to the easternmost parking area. This will provide you with the best access to the farm and avoid some of the crowds that go to the farm stand area for lunch or shopping.

Once you've paid your admission, you will have the opportunity to buy some different kinds of animal food. It's not necessary to buy this right away, there are spots to purchase the food in the farm. You enter through a covered area where you will find pens of small animals that are your best bet for feeding. There are bottles available as well as food pellets. One thing you will find here, there are a lot of ways to spend two dollars here and three dollars there, so it's best to head in with a budget in mind.

The pens at White Post Farms let you get really close to the animals. They all know the drill: when you approach they come right to the fence to see if you have any food for them. There are plenty of areas for kids to wash their hands after feeding the eager livestock.

In addition to the standard pigs, goats, cows and deer, there are a number of exotic animals to visit as well. You will find monkeys, kangaroos, zebra, llamas and even a chinchilla. Most of these animals are on special diets, so feeding them is off limits. As such, they're not always as eager as the domesticated animals to come over and say hello.

You will find plenty of shady areas to take a break at White Post Farms. Near the snack concession and picnic tables there's a singing animal show, The Barnyard Singing Chicken Show. It's a cute musical review featuring animatronic chickens singing familiar children's songs. The show plays continuously and there is plenty of bench seating.

A large pond is the home of White Post Farms aquatic animals. There are a number of fish and turtles living here, and the nicely landscaped area is perfect for taking a rest. This is also the area where you will find the public restrooms.

A terrific spot that sets White Post Farms apart from other animal exhibits is the playground area. This is a huge play space that features large wooden jungle gyms and trucks, as well as a pirate ship. The gravel play surface is not ideal, but the equipment is in great shape.

Adjacent to the playground sets is a playhouse village. Each of the houses is individually landscaped and kids have a ball running from house to house and exploring. There are pretty gingerbread houses, a barn and a log cabin among the many styles of house. On the opposite end of the playground area is a SpongeBob-themed play area for smaller children. There is also bounce area with a separate admission price that only inflates on weekends.

The White Post Mining Company is an old west-themed play area with a cutout main street and a large working sluice that winds its way around the whole space. Kids can buy bags filled with sand and "treasure" to sift through at the sluice. The winding troughs provide working space at many different heights to accommodate children of all ages. The main street set is a great spot for taking pictures.

There are rides at White Post Farms as well. The train winds its way through an imaginary Indian village, and kids who ride in the engine can ring the bell. You have to purchase tokens to go on any of the rides, and White Post Farms will steadfastly refuse to refund any unused token -- so if you're not sure if your children will like the rides (or pony rides), don't purchase more than you're sure you are going to use. This somewhat puzzling policy (NO REFUNDS is printed right on the tokens) was the only visitor-unfriendly complaint we had during our trip. The train ride tokens are $2.00 and the tokens for the rockers are fifty cents.

Horse and pony rides are available for adventurous children. Tokens must be purchased for $5.00 each and the ride winds its way around the center of the farm, led by a handler. The choice of a pony is perfect for smaller children, while kids up to 60 pounds can ride on the horse.

White Post Farms is open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $8.00 per person, and coupons are available for $2.00 off if you sign up on their website. If you're visiting on a weekend and want to take advantage of the inflatable bouncers, you can buy a $12 combo ticket. In the summertime, they mix in bouncers that spray water. Feed options for the animals range from twenty five cents for a handful from a vending box to $5.00 for a souvenir pail. Bottles are $2.00 each. A visit to White Post Farms can easily last three to four hours, longer if you pack a picnic lunch and your kids can't get enough of the playground.

Located at the south end of William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, Smith Point county park and beach is found at the eastern end of Fire Island. Along with Robert Moses State Park, it's one of the few parts of Fire Island that is accessible by car. The parking lot here is vast, stretching from the edge of the Great South Bay to the oceanfront bath house. To complement the great beach, the county has installed a new playground.

The playground is found at the western end of the park. It's in a nice picnic area with tables and grills. There's no view of the ocean from here, but you sure can hear it. There is one large playset that is intended for kids of all ages. Low stairs make climbing up easy for smaller kids, and there are more challenging approaches for kids who would prefer to climb. The play surface is just about the softest sand this side of Bermuda.

There are two music sets here as well. We've seen these at quite a few playgrounds recently, and they never quite deliver the sound that they promise. Still, most kids are quite content to bang away on the plastic drums.

There's a new swingset here as well. Considering the capacity of Smith Point and it's popularity in the summer time, there aren't nearly enough swings. But the two toddler swings and four standard swings are in great shape, with coated chains and no-pinch handles for the little ones. And they're so new that there aren't even trenches under the swings, so they are ideal for kids just learning to make the transition to the big kid swings.

The playset is roughly divided into two sections, with one part meant for smaller children and one for the bigger ones. The small section features five slides, two straight red ones and three colorful ones with a bit of curve to them. The climbing platforms can be reached via wide stairs or some more challenging wire climbs. Built-in favorites like a steering wheel and spinners are found throughout.

The older area boasts more varied climbs and monkey bars, but the highlight is a trio of steep colorful slides. There are overhanging shades located throughout the playset, which can be vital on a hot summer day. The playground is situated right next to the Beach Hut, so there are bathrooms, showers and food right nearby. You're also near enough to the patio to hear the live music performed throughout the summer.

Of course, the highlight of a visit to Smith Point is the beach. There are lifeguards on duty every day during the summer until 5:30 p.m. If you've got small children, take note that the surf at Smith Point is often very rough. Unlike Robert Moses park, where there are often tidal pools, Smith Point is just sandy beach that gets pounded by the waves. One happy result is that you'll find the best sand on (or just off) Long Island. The downside is that shell collecting can be something of a bust and you'll really have to keep an eye on small children.

Smith Point park is also the home of the Flight 800 Memorial Park. This is a wonderful garden area that memorializes those killed in the 1997 crash just south of the area and celebrates the incredible recovery effort that was taken on by the people of Long Island. The flags represent the many nations who lost citizens in the crash, and their names are recorded on a marble wall.

The memorial is surrounded by beautiful gardens, with the many native plant species labeled. It's definitely not a spot for small children to run around in, but a brief walk through will satisfy a child's curiosity and present some learning opportunities.

Smith Point County Park is open every day, with parking fees ($12) charged during the summer season from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition to being a great spot to spend the day, Smith Point is home to one of Suffolk County's largest and most popular campgrounds. You'll also find places to fish, surf, camp on the beach, and go off-roading.
Lakeland park is built around Connetquot Brook, which is a large pond that is fed by the Connetquot River. The parking lot is paved and provides ample space, is well-marked and situated between the entrance to the nature trails and the playground.

The playground is made up of two main structures, both of which feature a number of slides and built-in games. There are a series of climbs which range from the simple to the challenging. The play surface is a soft wood mulch. There is one swingset at Lakeland, with two toddler and two standard swings. All four have deep trenches, so smaller kids may have difficulty getting onto the standard swings on their own.

The larger platform is the launching pad for a nice set of triple wavy slides. Although there is shade nearby, these slides get a lot of sun exposure and can get pretty hot during the afternoon. In the adjacent shady area, there are many picnic tables for parents to take some cover while the kids play.

The highlight of the playground at Lakeland County Park is the accessibility. There is a large amount of handicap parking available just a few yards away from the playset. A long ramp provides easy entry to the platforms, and there are wide bridgeways that connect the two areas. Play spots like the steering wheel are close to the ground, and they are all seamlessly integrated with more challenging play equipment.

There are a number of nature trails that guide visitors through the park's preserve. It's almost completely boardwalk and hard sand, so taking a stroller through the trails is no problem. Kids may not always be so excited by a long walk through the woods, but the trails at Lakeland have their rewards. There are many opportunities to see wildlife, including fish, turtles, frogs, birds, ducks, geese -- we even saw some chipmunks. The woods here are full of sights & sounds, not to mention a little adventure. There were no trail maps during our visit, so we were never quite sure where we were.

Lakeland County Park is open every day until sunset. There are public restrooms that are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Despite its proximity to the Long Island Expressway and Vet's Highway, it's a nice spot for a quiet walk through the woods and some fun on a playground that is built for just about anyone.
Old Bethpage Village Restoration is located just off of Round Swamp Road, exit 48 on the Long Island Expressway. The parking lot is large and paved, and you can expect buses whenever school is in session. When entering through the visitor's center, you can purchase tickets and browse some of the rotating exhibits that are on display here. Be sure to pick up a map, as the village is large and there's a lot of walking. Ramps in and out of the center, as well as hard-packed dirt roads, make visiting with a stroller fairly simple, although you are not allowed to bring strollers into any of the houses or buildings on the property.

Being able to freely move in and out of the homes in the village is a highlight, and kids love the casual atmosphere. But what makes a trip special are the interpretive volunteers who occupy nearly every building. In period dress and in character, they are an engaging way to experience Long Island's history. Most are very knowledgeable about not only the homes where they can be found, but also about the social and economic conditions that the original occupants faced.

And it's not just stories that bring the village to life -- real craftsmen like the blacksmith, hat maker and weavers take the time to create things that children of today are accustomed to buying at the store. During our visit, a woman at the farmhouse patiently showed kids each step of the process of making wool, allowing them to touch everything along the way. The blacksmith effortlessly turned metal rods into the round hooks that adorn modern swingsets.

The working farm at Old Bethpage features a number of animals that kids can get close enough to touch. Cows, chickens, pigs and geese roam freely and in large pens just as they did 150 years ago. The farmhouse is the largest home at the restoration and has great examples of family rooms and an operating kitchen.

The interior of every house is full of period furniture and tools. There's not a whole lot of things inside the homes that you would consider hands-on, so you'll have to keep an eye on kids who are apt to reach out and grab something. But the interpreters at each building are very helpful in pointing out things that kids can touch and explaining what's cool about them.

The center of the village is where you'll find the inn, where pretzels and root beer are available for fairly reasonable pocket change. Just outside is a seating area where they hold bonfires during nighttime openings (such as the candlelit evenings in December). The tack shop here is also the home of the gift shop, where kids can buy wooden toys and the like. It's not unusual to catch groups of villagers congregating outside the general store, just like it might have been in the 1800's. Of the two roads leading out of town, the one that goes towards the farm will loop you back towards the village. You may take the second one past the chruch and the schoolhouse, but be aware that it takes you onto a long trip back to the visitors center.

The Old Bethpage Village Restoration is open from Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. on weekends. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children aged 5-12. Kids under five are free. Food is available at the visitors center, and there are restrooms located throughout the restoration (outhouses too!). For kids who are interested in history and not disinclined to walk, a trip to Old Bethpage is good for at least three hours.
Nestled between the Long Island Children's Museum and the Cradle of Aviation, the brand new pavilion that houses Nunley's Carousel is a wonderful new attraction. The wooden carousel, built in 1912 and a fixture at the beloved old Baldwin amusement park Nunley's for more than 55 years, has been restored into a gleaming classic.

Each of the 41 horses is like a work of art. Hand-painted and individually themed, kids can choose to ride on bucking broncos or knightly steeds. Most of the hoses go up and down during the ride, but there are a few stationary ones mixed in as well. The ride is so new right now that the leather belts that strap kids down are stiff. We've ridden our share of carousels, and one thing that stands out is the height of the horses -- riders get pretty far off the ground when their horse hits the upper arc of its gallop. And speaking of ground, the floor is a gorgeous smooth wood, not what you'd expect to see on a kiddie ride.

The music box that rings out during the ride is a festival of sound. A self-playing organ with drums and cymbals, the music is an adaptation of Billy Joel's "Waltz No.1," which was inspired by the Long Island native's boyhood trips to Nunley's.

Among the fascinating details on the carousel itself are many scenes of Long Island landmarks from the early 20th century. The pavilion is surrounded by windows that can rise up in good weather, making the space a nice visit no matter what is happening outside. There are large fans on the ceiling to keep things cool in the summer. The grounds surrounding the pavilion are a nice park with benches, pathways and vintage-looking streetlights. The whole area is fenced in, so kids can wander a bit without worrying about the traffic to the adjoining museums.

Nunley's Carousel on Museum Row is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 3:00 p.m. On weekends, they stay open until 5:00 p.m. Special summer hours for July and August will be announced. Rides are $2.00 per person, and adults must pay to accompany small children on the ride. There is a brass ring catch for free rides, but it was not working during our visit.
The New York Hall of Science is located in the corner of Corona Park that sits between the Long Island Expressway and the Grand Central Parkway. This is generally a very congested area as far as auto traffic goes, but there are plenty of signs to direct you to the museum entrance once you get off the expressway. There is a large, paved parking lot that is a short walk from the museum entrance. The Hall of Science is a very popular destination for school groups, so expect buses and lots of kids on school days.

Once inside, there are literally hundreds of hands-on science experiments and demonstrations. Many are geared towards school-aged kids, so the Central Pavilion can be skipped if you're visiting with small children. But if you have a mixed crowd, the Pavilion floor can be accessed easily with a stroller. The very popular bubble table is fun for all ages.

The ramp that leads down to the Pavilion floor gives you a great view of the Mercury capsule that is suspended from the ceiling. All along the way down, there are displays that encourage kids to explore the science behind light and sound.

In the North Wing there are a number of space-related exhibits, including a remote-controlled Mars explorer and workable models of some of the tools used by astronauts. This is also where you will find the preschool area, a gated play space that features a play supermarket, doll houses and toy car tracks. There are many books and even a few more elaborate exhibits that demonstrate simple physics like pulleys and cranks. This is a very secure area with a single entrance and a staff member that records each adult and number of children as you enter and exit.

Upstairs in the North Wing are two great exhibits that feature something for everyone. The sports exhibit lets kids clock their speed when throwing a variety of balls, measure the bounce of different balls, and test their reflexes with life-sized top fuel race cars that need to be shifted through their paces. In addition, an exhibit about networking combines hands-on demonstrations of how computer networks work alongside natural networks, like the huge ant colony.

Outside on the Hall of Science's grounds, you will find the Science Playground. This is a huge space, with lots of areas to explore. Most of the surface here is a soft composite padding, so running (and the inevitable falling) is no problem. There is a separate fee of $4.00 per child to explore the playground.

The outdoor area is open from April through December, and boasts a number of water centers that are ideal for warm weather. An extensive set of metal tools gives kids the chance to churn and redirect a long waterway, and there is a combination fountain and mister that kids can play in. There are also sand boxes, slides and plenty of places to play hide and seek.

The climbing space net is a unique take on the traditional playground jungle gym. It uses a flexible steel rope structure that responds to the climber's weight and demonstrates how the interlocking triangle shapes gives the structure strength.

The Rocket Garden is probably the most famous part of the museum, and it's visible from the Parkway. It's scheduled to open as a miniature golf course in June 2009, but non-golfers will still be able to walk outside and get a closer look at the Atlas and Titan rockets that powered America's Mercury and Gemini programs.

The New York Hall of Science is open seven days a week from April through August. From September through March they are closed on Mondays. The hours vary, but they are generally open from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. during the week and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekends. On Fridays, the museum stays open until 5:00 p.m. and offers free admission after 2:00 p.m. Check their website for schedule specifics. Admission for adults is $11.00 and children between the ages of two and seventeen pay $8.00.
The approach to Robert Moses State Park along the Causeway of the same name is one of the more scenic drives on Long Island. Two high bridges cross the Great South Bay (with a stopover at Captree State Park) and provide great water views of the north shore of Fire Island. The main bathing beach is located at field five, where there is ample parking.

There is a brand new playground at Robert Moses, and it is very similar to the setups at Jones Beach and Heckscher Park. It's a very colorful, state-of-the-art play space with lots of areas to explore. The close proximity to both the parking lot and the bath house (with its bathrooms and snack stand) are an extra bonus.

The back end of the playset features a replica of the three colorful slides that are sized down for smaller children. While not a completely separate area, the smaller play areas are concentrated in one spot with lots of space. Just to the back end of this area is a fire truck that is very popular with young ones. The truck faces inwards towards the big slides and rock wall, so siblings can see each other play.

This is a big playset with lots of places to explore. The whole area is fenced in with one long path that leads in and out, making it very easy to let kids explore without worrying that they'll wander off. There are places to get onto the playset that are challenging, such as the rock wall, as well as simple stairs and ramps for those who can't climb their way on. There are built-in games all over the set, although it must be said that many of them are missing parts.

The play surface at the Robert Moses State Park playground is a very soft composite. It is surrounded by powdery beach sand, and there are many benches surrounding the set for parents to take a break. For those hot and sunny beach days, there are many shaded areas on (and beneath!) the playset, as well as a gazebo.

Of course, the main attraction at Robert Moses is the beach. One of the great things about the huge parking lot here is that there are multiple access points to get onto the beach. Most people try to park close to the bath house, but if you'd rather avoid the heavy traffic you can park way out on the edges and still find a close trail onto the beach and boardwalk.

The beach at Robert Moses State Park is the best on Long Island for shell hunters. This is due largely to a phenomenon that makes it a great spot for little kids as well: the long and flat shoreline is a haven for tidal pools, where small children can frolic in the sand and water without worrying too much about waves or depth.

There is a long nature trail that leads visitors out to the lighthouse. The emphasis is on long -- children should be prepared for a lot of walking if a visit to the lighthouse is in your plans. The start of the trail can be found at the eastern end of parking field five. The whole trail is on a boardwalk, which makes the walk with a stroller a breeze. There are frequent spots to stop and sit, but very little in the way of shade.

Don't be surprised when out on the trail if you find that you're the ones being watched. This is a great trail to see a wide variety of wildlife, and there are helpful signs along the way that identify the kinds of birds and other animals that you're likely to see.

The end of the long trail culminates at the lighthouse and visitor's center. There is a steep set of stairs to get up to the lighthouse, so this should be the end of the line for strollers (there's plenty of stroller parking space here). A large anchor at the foot of steps is a nice picture spot for kids who made the long trek.

Inside the visitor's center, there are many artifacts and photographs of the lighthouse's history. A small gift shop features books, posters and other small momentos that you wouldn't mind carrying back. There is also a pair of vending machines for cold drinks and restrooms to prepare for the long return journey.

Robert Moses State Park is open seven days a week, year-round. There is a daily parking fee during the summer season, and Empire Passes are honored. The lighthouse is part of the Fire Island National Seashore, and is also open every day and is free to visit. In addition to the beach and playground, there is also a pitch and putt golf course, surfing and surf fishing.
