Belmont Lake State Park

Belmont Lake State Park Belmont Lake State Park in North Babylon features acres of hiking trails, boat rentals, some of Long Island's best fishing, and a waterfront playground.

Belmont Lake State Park

The playground at Belmont Lake State Park is rather modest by state park standards, but still provides a safe and scenic place for kids to play. The above playset is the park's largest, featuring a corkscrew slide, mini slide, a covered and a standard curved slide. There is a tunnel connecting one end of the playset to the other and many spots to climb.

This standalone corkscrew slider is right in front of the public restrooms, always an advantage with a large state park. The play surface at Belmont Lake is wood mulch and the area is not fenced in.

There are a number of anchored rockers like this motorcycle around the playground. Small children will get the most out of the playground at Belmont Lake. Older kids will find more enjoyment from the fishing and boating opportunities there.

Update: The anchored rockers are gone.

The swings feature sturdy frames and coated chains for safety.

This geodesic dome was once a common sight on playgrounds, but it's a rare find these days. This is strictly an older kid attraction, although the space-aged design will grab the attention of all children.  Buckminster Fuller would be proud.

Update:The dome is gone.

In the area where the dome once stood, a new playset for smaller children has been installed. It features a much-improved composite play surface and a trio of shorter slides that are better suited to younger kids than the high slides at the main play area. Easy climbing steps lead to a tunnel that kids can use to access the sliding platform, and there is an easy rock climb to get up there as well.

Another new addition are these swan boats than can be rented for a little spin on the lake. They're much more attractive to kids than the standard rowboats, and they look great floating out on the water.

The main draw, of course, is Belmont Lake. It's a beautiful sight all year round, and kids can get a closeup look at the ducks, swans and even some fish from the perimeter of the lake. The state park headquarters for Long Island is based here, and there are seasonal events such as the holiday tree lighting. There are plenty of tables around, so bringing a picnic or a snack is a good idea.  The park has it's own exit on the Southern State Parkway, so it's easy to get to.

Belmont Lake State Park is open every day from sunrise to sunset, and New York State parking fees apply during the summer season and weekends until Columbus Day.
