John J. Burns Park Playground
![]() |
The John J. Burns park in Massapequa boasts a state-of-the-art athletic complex and a nice little playground, marked by a field of blue. |

The John J. Burns park, located right on Merrick Road, features two playsets and three banks of swings. The main attraction here is the athletic fields for the older kids, but the young ones will find plenty to do at this well-maintained playground. It is smartly located right next to the bathroom facilities for the whole park, and there is plenty of free parking.

The large playset comes equipped with plenty of standard play areas: climbing platforms, slides and pavilions. One very nice built-in is this spelling wheel. It allows kids to mix and match letter combinations to make simple words.
The double bank of standard swings feature colorful frames and plenty of capacity. There is also a single bank of toddler swings. The chains are bare but are in good condition overall.

The smaller playset was actually the most popular during our visit. There are a lot of climbing opportunities and the sheetmetal double slide cries out for racing. Another spelling wheel is visible in the back right here -- this is a playground with some learning opportunities!

The most striking element of the playground at John J. Burns park, however, is the bright blue play surface. This is a terriific, soft composite surface that grips very well and will cushion any fall. It gives the whole playground a unique look that is very appealing to kids. Patches of grass in between provide a good place to sit, as do the numerous benches surrounding the area.
