The Weekend Planner, July 18
Friday evening gets things started in Sayville with a mini circus for kids at the Common Ground Rotary Park. It's supposed to be a very warm weekend, so if you'd rather stay close to the shore the Beatles cover band Strawberry Fields is performing a free concert at Overlook Beach in Babylon at 7:30. If square dancing is more your style, Wildwood State Park is starting their summer Friday dancing series tonight. Finally, at the Planting Fields Arboretum State Park in Oyster Bay there is an outdoor showing of hit kids movie 'Night at the Museum.'
Saturday brings day two of the Long Island Irish Festival at Abbess Farm in Calverton. There will be plenty of Irish music and food from the Emerald Isle. Also on the North Fork this weekend is the Riverhead Blues Festival. The Peconic waterfront is the setting for all-day music and food, and there will be fireworks at the conclusion Sunday night. It's within walking distance of the Atlantis Marineworld Aquarium (see our review) and the Long Island Science Center. For the animal lovers, there is a presentation on reptiles and turtles at Gardiner County Park in West Bay Shore at 5:00 p.m. Saturday night brings the Salute to America at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. There will be an Americana-themed concert followed by fireworks. Further east, Bellport's Stars Over the Bay will present fireworks over the Great South Bay that will be visible for miles.
Sunday brings a number of events with an historical flair. The Old Bethpage Village Restoration is hosting a weekend-long re-enactment of Civil War military camps and battles. In Huntington, the historical society is re-creating the introduction of the Declaration of Independence to the local citizens on the village green at noon. The old-style technology of weathervanes are celebrated at the Long Island Museum of American Art History & Carriages in Stony Brook at 2:00 p.m. While in Stony Brook, you can catch a free concert by the Round Midnight Ensemble at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Center. If you're looking for a more modern diversion (more modern than horse buggies, anyway), there's a classic car show at the Flowerfields Fairgrounds in St. James. For the budding scientist, the Brookhaven National Laboratory begins their summer Sundays this weekend with free shows and exhibits that open at 10:00 a.m. Eisenhower Park's International Concert Series continues on Sunday night at 7:30 with a celebration of African-American music at the Lakeside Theater. Finally, don't forget those fireworks in Riverhead following the conclusion of the Blues Festival. If you're taking a long weekend, Merrick Road Park in Merrick is hosting the Rod Stewart tribute band Forever Young at 8:00 p.m. Monday night.
