Flight 800 Memorial Park
The main playset at Flight 800 Memorial Park is an extensive series of levels and platforms that are joined together by curved bridges and walkways. The effect is a set that has the appearance of a complex that begs for exploration. The set is a little short on built-in games and other standards like monkey bars and slides (there are three slides and two monkey bars), but the size gives kids plenty of room to roam.
A smaller playset features a wide sheet metal slide and two easy climbs to get onto the platform. There is also a short tunnel with a moderate dropoff to the ground. The play surface at Flight 800 Memorial Park is a wood mulch, and the memorial playground area is fenced in.
There is a very nice alphabet roll board built into the small playset. A few of the rollers have chipped away, but the bright colors and animals & objects on the rollers are a fun way to go through the alphabet.
The parking lot at Flight 800 Memorial Park is paved, but not especially well-marked. It's not a very large parking area, and the playgrounds are divided on either side of the parking. There is a path that leads from one side to the other, past the public restrooms. A small climbing set is on the pond side of the park, with a wall climb, chain ladder and a spiral ladder. They also have a log roll, for those kids with extra energy to burn. This side of the park in not fenced in, except for a post and rail fence that lines the parking area.
There is one swingset at Flight 800 Memorial Park, with two toddler and two standard swings. There was an orderly queue to get a spot on the swings during our visit. There is a beach on Kalers Pond, but not one you'd want to go swimming at. Still, it's a large play area with soft sand that's fun to play in. A gazebo overlooks the whole area from above -- the pond's shore is a good 15 feet lower than the parking area with a steep walk down.
If you're at the park and want to take a stroll, the Terrell River County Park is just across the street and is a sprawling nature preserve. Near the park there is also the Kaler's Pond Audubon Center, which is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4:00 p.m. in June, July and August.
