The Weekend Planner, August 15th

As summer starts to wind down, the earlier sunsets mean more outdoor movies while the weather is still warm. There are a pair of good family film bets this weekend, as well as some concerts, car shows and events on the beach.

Friday night at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa presents an outdoor showing of recent release "Horton Hears a Who," the animated adaptation of the Dr. Suess classic. Bring your own blanket and popcorn. If live music is more your style, the Long Island Philharmonic is performing a free concert at Eisenhower Park on Friday night as well. If you just can't choose don't worry -- you can catch the Philharmonic on Saturday at Heckscher Park in Huntington as well.

Saturday brings a host of festivals, including Riverhead's annual Polish Town Polka Party. Traditional Polish food, music and dancing complement a street fair and activities for children on Saturday and Sunday. At Tanner Park in Copiague, the Long Island Bluegrass Festival brings some of the top names in this traditional American music to Long Island. The Holbrook Festival at Seneca Middle School is the place for rides, games and all the standard carnival fun all weekend long.

Captree State Park is hosting a Snapper Derby on Saturday. Children are invited to compete in three age levels to catch the biggest fish. If eating fish is more to your liking, The Long Island Maritime Museum Seafood Festival in West Sayville is this weekend. Special exhibits at the museum complement the huge tent with all the best seafood Long Island has to offer. This weekend is also the Leukemia Cup Regatta at the Sayville Yacht Club, so there will be plenty of sailboats to watch while you dine. If you want to make a full day of it, there will be an outdoor showing of "Bee Movie" at the Sayville Marina Park Saturday night.

There are only a few more weekends to enjoy the beach left in 2008, and the weather is supposed to be very nice after Saturday morning. Cupsogue Beach County Park in Westhampton Beach is hosting a sandcastle contest on Saturday. Entrants have to be registered by noon, but you can head over any time and enjoy their handiwork. A second contest is being held on Sunday at Meschutt Beach County Park in Hampton Bays.

If your little one is a car nut, there are some great chances to see some classic cars this weekend. The Long Island Cars Summer Car Show and Swap Meet is being held all weekend at Belmont race track. The Southampton Antique Auto Show is on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Rogers Mansion, while on Sunday there's another antique auto show at Kennedy Plaza in Long Beach.

Sunday brings the chance to get close to some wildlife. The Department of Environmental Conservation is hosting a saltwater fishing clinic at Jones Beach from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. where kids can learn basic fishing techniques and discuss marine ecology. Rods and bait are provided for fishing. At Sagamore Hill on Sunday afternoon, the Theodore Roosevelt Audubon Sanctuary brings a presentation about birds of prey featuring owls, hawks and falcons. If you like your wildlife a little more fanciful, Tanner Park is hosting the Asylum Beach Party Massacre, a tribute to B-movie monsters starting at 5:30 p.m. Sunday evening.
