The Weekend Planner, August 1st

Sports and rides are on the agenda this weekend, as Old Bethpage Village hosts their annual "Base Ball" tournament while Sayville is the scene for the annual Summerfest. Animal lovers will find plenty of opportunities to get close to species both domestic and wild while music afficionados will have their choice of venues and styles.

The Sayville Summerfest kicks things off on Friday and continues throughout the weekend. There are a ton of rides, games, food, music and more. On Sunday, main street gets closed down for a classic car show. There are a number of concerts on Friday night as well, with a Doo-Wop show at Tanner Park in Copiague and a big band performance at Sunset Park in Port Washington.

The parade of animal events starts off on Saturday with the 4-H Summer Fair at the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank. Get a preview of the livestock that will go on to compete at the New York State Fair. For more farm animal fun, there's the Summer Barn Bash at Northport's Lewis-Oliver Farm. There will be hay rides, live music and a pie-eating contest for those who like to watch people at their porcine best. If watching animals from afar is more your speed, there are nature tours at Garvies Point Preserve in Glen Cove as part of the Garvies Point Day celebration.

This is a big weekend for sports lovers as the Old Bethpage Village Restoration hosts its annual Base Ball Tournament. Teams from all over the Northeast come to compete under nineteenth century rules, uniforms and equipment. The two-day celebration includes rounders games for kids and brass band concerts. We could describe it further, but nobody has done it better than Conan O'Brien. If football is your favored sport, the New York Jets are holding their annual Family Day at their practice facility at Hofstra. Kids can meet some of their favorite players both past and present and take home an autograph.

Further east, the Southold Historical Society is hosting an ice cream social at the Maple Lane Museum complex. Hay rides, face painting, music, games and of course, ice cream will be available. The Our Lady of Mercy summer fair in Hicksville starts the evening with rides and other carnival fare, while Patti Smyth reunites with Scandal to perform a free concert at the John J. Burns Park in Massapequa.

If all of those tame, domesticated animals on Saturday left you yearning for more adventure, check out the Long Island Wolf Expo on Sunday. In addition to the live wolves, there will be Native American storytelling, crafts and conservation workshops. Kids can let their imagination take to the skies at Come Fly with Us, a demonstration of radio-controlled model airplanes at Cedar Creek Park's aerodrome on Sunday morning. Also on Sunday morning, Noggin regular Laurie Berkner performs a concert with her band at the Brookhaven Amphitheater at Bald Hill. Sunday afternoon features the magic show of Mark & Kym making an appearance at Orient Beach State Park.

Monday night brings a generational battle of the bands. Tweens will volunteer to clean dishes for the rest of the summer for the chance to go see the American Idol finalists in concern Monday night at Nassau Coliseum. Parents may wish instead to expose kids to some classic rockers as The Police play at that great summer venue, the Jones Beach Theater. Or, you could save yourself $200 and go see Steve Maglio perform his Frank Sinatra tribute at Hewlett Point Park.
