The Weekend Planner, August 22nd
Two big festivals that will run all weekend kick things off on Friday night, as the Mother Cabrini Italian Feast brings rides, games and food to the Suffolk Community College campus in Brentwood. Further west, the Sons of Italy Italian Feast brings more of the same to Michael J. Tully Park in New Hyde Park.
Saturday means caber tossing and haggis as the Scottish Games come to Old Westbury Gardens. Admission for adults is $15, children are $5. There will be music and dancing, games and races for kids and a petting zoo with pony rides among the many attractions. If your kids are more 21st century in their entertainment needs, the Disney Music Block Party at Nassau Coliseum will be running all day from Friday through Sunday. Children's favorites They Might be Giants and Dan Zanes headline the music acts at a whole family festival with interactive fun and games. Admission is $36. While you're in the neighborhood, you may want to check out the Hollywood Movie and Television Custom Car Show at the Cradle of Aviation museum. The Batmobile and Ghostbusters car will be among the many notables on display, in addition to a military vehicle display. Admission is $7.
Vehicles of a larger sort will be on display at the Riverhead Railroad Festival on Saturday and Sunday. Model trains and locomotive races join live music performances to bring the rails alive, $6 for adults and $3 for children. Saturday night brings an outdoor movie showing of that classic end-of-summer family favorite Grease to the Sayville Marina Park. Fireworks will be on display at the Mother Cabrini Italian Feast on Saturday night. If fireworks alone aren't loud enough for you, the "I Love America Night" at Riverhead Raceway will feature a minibus demolition derby and Figure 8 racing before getting down to the aerial explosives.
The Town of Babylon is holding its annual Beach Blast on Saturday at Overlook Beach. Residents can get in for free, but outsiders will have to pony up $20 to park. Rides and games are accompanied by live music and an ice cream eating contest.
If you're waiting for Sunday to hit the Railroad Festival, you can make a whole day of the train theme with a stop at the Long Island Live Steamers at Southaven Park, where they're having a public run day. For the budding outdoorsman, there's the children's saltwater clinic at Jones Beach where kids can learn about marine ecology and loaner rods are available to get fishing. In West Islip, the Bob's Stores Ramp Tour brings a huge show of skateboarding and BMX racing to Long Island.
A sample of the sea's fare can be had all weekend at the West Sayville Maritime Museum's Seafood Festival. On Sunday, the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association Marina hosts the Annual Blue Claw Crab Festival. Both festivals offer games and crafts for kids in addition to the food. Wrapping up the weekend, Monday night brings a drive-in movie classic to field four at Jones Beach: The Wizard of Oz.
