The Weekend Planner, September 12th
Putting a capper on the first full week of school is one of the last opportunities to watch an outdoor movie in 2008. Disney's Enchanted is playing at Deepwells Farm County Park in St. James, starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night. A few of the festivals will already be underway tonight as well. The Levittown Italian Festival at the Yours Ours Mine Community Center runs from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Friday and from noon to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday with rides, games and food. Also getting started on Friday evening is the Sag Harbor Harborfest, with the Old Fashioned Clam & Lobster Bake. At $75 a ticket, you may want to wait until Saturday to head to Sag Harbor unless your kids really like lobster. But starting on Saturday morning with a 10:00 a.m. parade, there will be lots to see and do including boat building and races, tours, concerts, children's shows, food... the list goes on. For the complete schedule of events, see their website at sagharborchamber.com.
Also starting on Friday night and running all weekend is the American Music Festival in Port Jefferson. Over 30 musical acts are scheduled to perform on four stages and in strolling style throughout the town until Sunday evening. Shows geared especially towards children and rides will provide the fun for the entire family. The Sands Point Medieval Festival enters its second week on Saturday, this time without the threat of a major storm bearing down on us. Jousting knights, minstrels and fair maidens will be taking over from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the scenic grounds of the Sands Point Preserve.
If you're holding out until Sunday to head out to Sands Point, you can also stop by North Hempstead Beach Park for the Beach Fest. A waterfront petting zoo will be accompanied by music, crafts and sandcastle building. Admission is $15 per car and the Beach Fest runs from noon to 6:00 p.m.
Over on the south shore, there are a pair of festivals running all weekend. Lido Beach is hosting the Festival by the Sea on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, and there will be music, games, puppet shows, a petting zoo, clowns and giant inflatable bouncers. At Captree State Park in Babylon you'll find the annual Harvest and Seafood Festival. More bounce houses, crab races, boat rides and local seafood and produce will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
There are two children's festivals happening this weekend. On Saturday, the Northport Children's Festival and Craft Fair will be at Crab Meadow Beach from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $5 and there will be clowns, pony rides and fire safety demonstrations. On Sunday, Old Westbury Gardens will host their annual KidFest. Kids are invited to explore the gardens from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and enjoy games, music and art with concerts by kid favorites Astrograss and the Dirty Sock Fun Time Band.
Finally, if you're heading to Port Jefferson on Sunday for the music festival, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization is presenting a Corvette Car Show on Main Street in Stony Brook from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be over 75 cars, from classics to customized modern models. Admission is free.
