The big Harvest Festival at the Tri-County Flea Market in Levittown started last night and runs all weekend. Carnival rides, food and games will be open all weekend with some children's activities and live music thrown in. There will even be a pumpkin patch, for those who prefer not to get mud in their shoes while hunting for this years great pumpkin. Also in Levittown on Saturday night, the annual Nassau County 6th Battalion Parade and fair will be held at the Levittown Fire Deptartment with events getting underway at 5:00 p.m.
If saying goodbye to summer has got you down, the Kite Flying Festival at the Long Island Maritime Museum provides a colorful reminder of a favorite seaside activity. While there's no beach at the West Sayville location, it is right on the water and the sky will be filled with large exhibition kites and smaller ones that kids can make themselves. The event is on Saturday and runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is only $2, while children under five are free. The kits to make your own kite cost $5. If you're in the neighborhood, you can also stop by Sayville's Common Ground Park to enjoy the free Saturday Symphony concert at 4:00 p.m.
Further east in Water Mill, the Seven Ponds Orchard will be hosting their Harvest Day. From 10:00 a.m. to noon, there will be hay rides, apple picking and the official opening of the corn maze. The $10 per person admission includes a quarter peck bag for apples, the corn maze, a hayride and bouquet of pick-your-own flowers.
Up on the north fork, the village of Greenport is hosting a Maritime Festival. There will be craft vendors, music, old-fashioned games, a kayak derby and whaleboat races. And don't forget about the carousel. A parade will be held on Saturday at noon and a clam chowder contest on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The three Harbes Farms locations in Mattituck, Jamesport and Riverhead are also beginning their Pumpkin Festival weekends. Starting this Sunday and running through October 26th, there will be pumpkin picking, roasted corn, candy apples, corn mazes and hayrides to get you into an autumnal state of mind.
This weekend is Homecoming at Hofstra University, and Sunday brings the 16th annual Italian Festival as part of the celebration. Entertainment, music, food, vendors and children's activities fill the Memorial and Playhouse Quads. A $5 donation is requested. If you're looking for something a little more quiet, the Pagan-Fletcher Restoration in Valley Stream is hosting an antique doll exhibit from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
