The Weekend Planner, September 26th

Long Island finds itself awash in rain as we enter the last weekend of September. The weekend planner presents our weekly checklist of things to do over the weekend, but be sure to check the individual websites for weather-related cancellations.

The Long Island Fair at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration kicked off on Thursday with a nineteenth century agricultural harvest celebration. Animal and produce exhibits are combined with traditional music and games for a step back in time. The fair is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through Sunday. Admission for adults is $10, children from five to twelve are $7 and kids under five are free.

Also running throughout the weekend is the Bellmore Family Street Festival. A huge fair with a western theme, Bellmore will feature character parades, craft and technology expos, a petting zoo, food, entertainment and a carnival. The center of the action is the LIRR Bellmore station on Sunrise Highway.

Everyone loves a wet dog, and there will be plenty of them at the annual AKC Dog Show at the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. The Long Island all breed trials are taking place this weekend and are open to the public. If your idea of a big dog is more along the lines of a 426 HEMI engine, then you'll find what you love at the Bridgehampton Historical Society's Classic Car Show. In addition to the show and competition, there will be a road rally on Saturday afternoon.

Huntington's Manor Farm is hosting an environmental fair on Saturday afternoon from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This free event will feature demonstrations and displays of environmentally-friendly ideas that your family can put into practice every day. There will also be music and games for kids. The South Fork Science Center will host their own environmentally-themed event on Saturday when they showcase the many species of tropical fish that find their way into our waters when Gulf Stream eddies carry them north. It may have been an actual blue tang that your kids saw when they excitedly pointed out Dory at the beach...

Wildwood State Park in Wading River hosts their annual Fall Festival on Saturday. There will be pony rides, music, games and more. The pie eating contest is always a highlight. Speaking of pies, the Long Island Apple Festival is being held on Sunday at the Sherwood-Jayne House in East Setauket. There will be a ton of apple-themed activities including apple doll making, apple-on-a-string, apple relay races and an apple pie baking contest. If all that sounds a bit too sweet for your palette, head over to the John Gardiner Farm in Greenlawn where they're hosting a Pickle Festival. Also on Sunday, it's one of your last opportunities to catch a ride on the Long Island Live Steamers in Southaven Park.

Enjoy the weekend, and stay dry!
