The Weekend Planner, October 10th

It's Fall Festivals galore this weekend, even as the forecast calls for a bit of Indian Summer. The last gasp of Long Island carnival rides are popping up, and there is even a fireworks show out in Montauk.

Huntington's Heckscher Park will be hosting their annual Fall Festival throughout the weekend and into Columbus Day. From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. there will be music and food, pony rides and a petting zoo, crafts, a farmer's market and carnival rides. Another weekend-long festival is being held at Hempstead Lake State Park, where they're holding their annual Carousel Festival. Live music, food and games for children complement the great carousel ride that they're celebrating. Finally, The village of Farmingdale is holding their annual street fair this weekend, with games, food, rides and more. Located right on Main Street, the fair is open on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

One-day events begin on Saturday with the Grand Old Air Show at the Northeast Air Park in Shirley. It's a somber event this year, as a member of their group recently passed and there will be no flying shows this year. There will, however, be all of their planes on the ground that kids can get a closeup look at. The grounds at the air park will be open from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids between six and twelve, while five and under are free. Just north of Shirley at the Longwood Estate will be the Fall Festival & Halloween Happening from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will be pumpkin decorating, fall crafts and even a pumpkin chucking contest (and who doesn't love a good ole fashioned punkin chuck?). Costumed revelers are encouraged.

Way out east, you can take advantage of the great weather and visit Montauk for their Fall Festival. In town, there will be pumpkin decorating, carnival games, bounce houses and food. That evening, out on the beach, is the last of this year's big public fireworks shows -- Stars Over Montauk presented by Grucci.

Sunday brings the Old Time Harvest Festival at Brenner's Farm. In keeping with their nineteenth-century motif, Brenner's presents traditional folk music and demonstrations of agricultural crafts, like making apple cider. The fair runs from noon to 4:00 p.m. Riverhead is the site for the Country Fair on Sunday afternoon, with carnival and pony rides, food and music, boat rides and demonstrations of vintage farm equipment. That is running from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. in downtown Riverhead. Finally, if you'd like to get into the fall spirit and look ahead to Thanksgiving, there is a worthy event at the Garden of Eve Farm in Aquebogue. Their Gleaning Farm Visit Day given volunteers the chance to comb through their fields and gather any leftover foods, the proceeds of which will be given to charitable organizations that are fighting hunger on Long Island. A valuable lesson and a fun time for kids.
