The Weekend Planner, October 3rd

This weekend, the fall festivals come on full force. All of the big pumpkin patches are open for business, and there are a number of apple and harvest festivals going on as well. And if you look close enough, there are a few things to do that won't remind you that the warm days of summer are slipping away.

For those of you who weren't able to get tickets for Elmo's Green Thumb at the Coliseum this week, there is still plenty to do with your kids. The AKC dog show at Old Westbury Gardens continues this weekend with the agility trials. There won't be any rain this weekend to dampen the mood (or the contestants), so expect lots of fur to fly. The trials are being held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission to watch the action is $10 for adults, $5 for kids aged seven to twelve and under seven are free.

For kids whose imaginations take to the skies, there are a pair of events on Sunday. The Cradle of Aviation on Museum Row in Garden City will celebrate NASA's 50th birthday and World Astronomy Day from noon to 4:00 p.m. You’ll be able to view the evening sky in the Cradle's StarLab as well as Sun Spotting (weather permitting) with members of the Amateur Observers Society. There will even be birthday cake! Meanwhile, over at Sunken Meadow State Park, the Long Island Flying Eagles will be hosting their Fall Remote Control Air Show. From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the skies will be abuzz with model airplanes. Spectator admission is free, parking in lot #2.

A more Earth-bound activity is taking place at the Nassau Museum of Art in Roslyn on Saturday. Children's book illustrator Steven James Petruccio will be hosting A Day in the Life of a Book, his detailed story of the journey an idea takes as it goes from pen to press. The program starts at 11:00 a.m. and costs $35, $20 for museum members, preregistration is required. If you're in the neighborhood and are ready to start with the fall-themed activities, Hicks Nurseries in Westbury is holding their Giant Pumpkin Judging contest on Sunday afternoon. After checking out the giant gourds (previous winners have been over 1,000 pounds), kids can enjoy hayrides, farm animals, roasted corn and ghost stories.

The main pumpkin attraction this weekend, however, will be at the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank. The Cornell University Cooperative Extension is hosting their annual PumpkinFest this weekend, with pumpkin picking and decoration, carnival games, wagon rides, a corn maze, music and lots of activities for kids. The festival runs from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $10, kids three and under are free. They'll even have cow chip bingo!

Pumpkins aren't the only crop that we celebrate this time of year -- there are a pair of apple festivals happening on Saturday. The First United Methodist Church in Amityville will be selling apples in all of their sweet wonder: in bags, bushels, pies and donuts. There will also be a craft fair, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Also on Saturday, the Stony Brook Community Church will be hosting their own Fall Apple Festival and Fair. There will be homemade apple foods of every variety: pies, soups, fritters, chillies and candied apples. There will also be music, games, pumpkin decorating and a moonwalk.

Finally, on the east end, the Hallockville Museum Farm is hosting their Fall Festival and Craft Show on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pumpkin picking is the main attraction, with live music, children's activities and vendors rounding out the festivities. Admission is $7, $5 for children aged six to twelve and kids under six are free.
