The Weekend Planner, January 30th

This weekend marks the halfway point of winter, 2009. The busy weekends of spring and summer are still two months away, but there are a few activities around Long Island to keep you busy this weekend.

The Long Island Recreational Fishing Expo takes place this weekend at Farmingdale State University on route 110. In addition to lectures, demonstrations and an expo, there will be children's fishing clinics on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Admission is $8.00, kids under 12 are free.

Saturday morning at East Hampton's Guild Hall is the site for the Guild Hall Childrens Art Workshop. Artist Linda Capello will guide children five and older through creating their own decorative journal. The workshop runs from 11:00 a.m. to noon and costs $5.00, $3.00 for members.

If the low temps outside don't bother you, there are a pair of wildlife walks this weekend. The Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Oakdale lets kids become animal detectives by learning about tracking animals in the winter and then heading outside to see what they can find. The adventure begins at 9:30 a.m. and runs until 11:00 a.m. At Nissequogue River State Park from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., kids can learn about how the park's residents keep warm during an indoor presentation and then head out to explore the park. Admission for both events is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for children, advance registration required.

If staying inside with a warm bowl of soup is more your speed, check out the annual SOUPer Bowl Contest in Port Washington. To celebrate the big game going on down in Tampa, local restaurants will set up at the Fellowship Hall United Methodist Church with their best soups and give the public samples. Tasters will vote on their favorites and a SOUPer Bowl Champion will be named. The event runs from noon to 3:00 p.m. Admission is $12.00 for adults, $3.00 for children.

On Sunday afternoon, the Ward Melville Heritage Organization in Stony Brook presents a celebration of Chinese New Year. Ring in the Year of the Ox with festivities including a Lion Dance by Wu Mei Kung Fu Association, Spotlight Dance Academy and Stony Brook Taiko Drum Ensemble. The festivities begin at 1:30 p.m., admission is $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for kids under 12. Advance reservations are required, see their website or call (631) 751-2244.
