State Park Budget Crunch
Caleb Smith State Park Preserve: Now closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Evening fly fishing no longer available.
Caumsett State Historic Park: Early closing on weekdays (5:00 p.m.), normal weekend hours will continue (8:00 p.m. closing).
Heckscher State Park: The swimming pool season will be shortened by four weeks -– opening later (on July 4th) and closing early (on August 17th).
Hempstead Lake State Park: The carousel will be open on weekends and holidays only (closed weekdays; the carousel previously was open seven days/week).
Jones Beach State Park: The East Bathhouse swimming pool and the West End ocean swimming beach will be closed for 2009. The Zach's Bay swimming area will be open for Memorial Day, but then close until June 27th, and will close for the season early, on August 16th. The Field 1 ocean swimming beach will be open only three major weekends.
Robert Moses State Park: The Field 2 Beach area will close for the winter four weeks early, on October 31st.
A reduced slate of programming is in the works as well, meaning fewer concerts and festivals at most state parks on Long Island. Some examples of programs that will be reduced or eliminated include: Heckscher Spring Festival, Children's Summer Theater, Cultural Areas Concert Series, Shakespeare in the Park, and campground programming. "By concentrating the changes to the shoulder seasons, off-peak hours or facilities where similar services are available nearby, we hope to minimize the impact on our patrons," said Carol Ash, Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. There are no plans to completely close any park, and the access fees have remained the same.
